Working On Progress

*
Pain finds Solace

and

Solace finds Pain

I am very grateful to discover that I am still a work in progress.

Maybe there really is hope for me, and some chance that I might somehow learn how to be a devotee and serve Srila Prabhupad.

Maybe.

Thinking Of Krishna

It's strange how many people really don't understand that the whole entire meaning of "Krishna consciousness" is to be absorbed in thoughts of Krishna.

Not thoughts of "things somehow related to Krishna".

I guess with a little understanding, we can see that actually Every Thing is related to Krishna.

Why do we need to immerse ourselves particularly in Indian "things related to Krishna" when the entire creation, and everyone in it is "related to Krishna".

I know when you don't yet see that, it helps to have things that remind you of Krishna.

When you start worshiping those things, and thinking of those "things", and being absorbed in those things, rather than Krishna Himself, then the those things have actually become:

An Obstacle

to

Krishna

(consciousness)

The Power Of Krishna's Name

āpannaḥ saḿsṛtiḿ ghorāḿ

yan-nāma vivaśo gṛṇan

tataḥ sadyo vimucyeta

yad bibheti svayaḿ bhayam

SYNONYMS

āpannaḥ — being entangled; saḿsṛtimin the hurdle of birth and death; ghorām — too complicated; yat — what; nāma — the absolute name; vivaśaḥ — unconsciously; gṛṇan — chanting; tataḥ — from that; sadyaḥ — at once; vimucyeta — gets freedom; yat — that which; bibheti — fears; svayam — personally; bhayam — fear itself.

TRANSLATION

Living beings who are entangled in the complicated meshes of birth and death can be freed immediately by even unconsciously chanting the holy name of Kṛṣṇa, which is feared by fear personified.

PURPORT

Vāsudeva, or Lord Kṛṣṇa, the Absolute Personality of Godhead, is the supreme controller of everything.

There is no one in creation who is not afraid of the rage of the Almighty.

Great asuras like Rāvaṇa, Hiraṇyakaśipu, Kaḿsa, and others who were very powerful living entities were all killed by the Personality of Godhead.

And the almighty Vāsudeva has empowered His name with the powers of His personal Self.

Everything is related to Him, and everything has its identity in Him.

It is stated herein that the name of Kṛṣṇa is feared even by fear personified.

This indicates that the name of Kṛṣṇa is nondifferent from Kṛṣṇa.

Therefore, the name of Kṛṣṇa is as powerful as Lord Kṛṣṇa Himself.

There is no difference at all.

Anyone, therefore, can take advantage of the holy names of Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa even in the midst of greatest dangers.

The transcendental name of Kṛṣṇa, even though uttered unconsciously or by force of circumstances, can help one obtain freedom from the hurdle of birth and death.

What Prabhupad Wanted......

It's a very interesting premise, when I think about what to do, or not do, based on "what Prabhupad wanted".

Prabhupad wanted a lot of things.

He wanted some things more than other things. By that I mean, some things he not only wanted, he expected, demanded.

He expected all of his initiated disciples to chant 16 rounds a day, and follow the 4 regulative principles.

Now of course he didn't get that, but that was "what Prabhupad wanted" first and foremost.

I try to keep that in mind when I start to get overwhelmed by all the things I hear that "I should do".... "because Prabhupad wanted it".

For me, it's essential to focus on the most important things that Prabhupad wanted.

I guess it's natural that we will each be "selective" in our desires to bring about the other things that Prabhupad wanted. We each have different propensities and purposes.

What's So Amazing?

One of the most amazing and wonderful things (to me) about Krishna consciousness is that there is individuality.

While I may feel that we don't need more "exhibits" to entertain people, someone else may feel that we do.

Does that mean they are wrong and I am right? Does that mean I am wrong and they are right?

Not at all.

It means that each one of us has our own individual gifts to offer Krishna.

It's the person inside, the devotee, the quality of that devotee, and the devotion in their offering to Krishna that makes whatever "form" they use to offer their gift:

* beautiful, wonderful, successful, helpful, beneficial, and uplifting to everyone.

Krishna is unlimited.

Therefore, there is unlimited room for everything that any devotee wants to offer.

Everything can be used in the service of Krishna.

*

Get Real

I don't think people need any more "exhibits" to entertain them.

I think they need to see humanity in action. Evolved humanity.

Caring, involved, evolved, humanity.

They also need to participate actively in it.

Not only in their own evolution, but also in the evolution of others, and the society as a whole.

*

Distorted Values

"The people of this age are also very lazy, not only materially but in the matter of self-realization.

The human life is especially meant for self-realization.

That is to say, man should come to know what he is, what the world is, and what the supreme truth is.

Human life is a means by which the living entity can end all the miseries of the hard struggle for life in material existence and by which he can return to Godhead, his eternal home.

But, due to a bad system of education, men have no desire for self-realization. Even if they come to know about it, they unfortunately become victims of misguided teachers.

In this age, men are victims not only of different political creeds and parties, but also of many different types of sense-gratificatory diversions, such as cinemas, sports, gambling, clubs, mundane libraries, bad association, smoking, drinking, cheating, pilfering, bickerings, and so on.

Their minds are always disturbed and full of anxieties due to so many different engagements.

In this age, many unscrupulous men manufacture their own religious faiths which are not based on any revealed scriptures, and very often people who are addicted to sense gratification are attracted by such institutions.

Consequently, in the name of religion so many sinful acts are being carried on that the people in general have neither peace of mind nor health of body.

The student (brahmacārī) communities are no longer being maintained, and householders do not observe the rules and regulations of the gṛhastha-āśrama.

Consequently, the so-called vānaprasthas and sannyāsīs who come out of such gṛhastha-āśramas are easily deviated from the rigid path.

In the Kali-yuga the whole atmosphere is surcharged with faithlessness.

Men are no longer interested in spiritual values.

Material sense gratification is now the standard of civilization.

For the maintenance of such material civilizations, man has formed complex nations and communities, and there is a constant strain of hot and cold wars between these different groups.

It has become very difficult, therefore, to raise the spiritual standard due to the present distorted values of human society."

Become The Change

"Become the change you wish to see in the world"
Mahatma Gandhi

I talk about change a lot, change this, change that, how to change, what to change.

Why do we need change? What's wrong with the way things are?

In any life, in any situation, there is usually some kind of striving. Most of us strive, and do have aspirations, endeavors.

Some people are very dull. They have no dreams, no goals, no aspirations. They are satisfied with things as they are. The "status quo" as it were. No striving. No dreams. "Keep things as they are and I'm happy, as long as I don't have to change".

The deadly comfort zone.

"Don't make me change, and I won't make you change" (i.e., you're okay, I'm okay, we're all okay)

For those who are on a spiritual path, this very satisfaction is like death. We don't want to "accept things" as they are, we want to change things. Improve things, work things out, fix things, create things, renew things.

Creative force is part of the soul. The soul is creative. It's not the Supreme Creator, but it does consist of energy, it is energy, personified energy. Energy that is a small particle of the Supreme Energy.

So, we want to "create", we want to arrange, we want to contribute, influence, affect, participate, ... Change.

In material consciousness we try to change the external world. We want to change our living situation, our mates, our friends, our social status, whatever. Some more energetic people want to change the environment, the society, the world.

In spiritual life, we want to change things too. We want to change how people view devotees, how many people become devotees, how we preach to others. We want to influence people to become Krishna conscious.

All these things in spiritual life are ways to engage ourselves in Krishna consciousness and help others become Krishna conscious.

When we are actively engaged in changing ourselves from within, then we are more actively engaged in changing others from without. The more we are actively engaged in changing ourselves from within, the more we will be effectively engaged in changing others from without.

If we are not actively rooting out the cause of our own personal inability to surrender to Krishna, then we can't actively engage in rooting out the cause of other peoples inability to surrender to Krishna.

*Some of us are already totally surrendered to Krishna in every way possible. For the rest of us, it's essential to actively cultivate change from within, and root out the things that keep us from being totally surrendered to Krishna.

We think our minds can sort out and logically analyze all the ways to do this, or do that. But really, it comes from looking inside. There is always more to see, more to let go of.

We are all very dependent on the external environment and influenced by it. Even when that environment involves our devotional environment.

Our friends, our associates, our service, our commitments. (I would call this a "spiritual comfort zone")

We need to let go of all comfort zones to reach our highest goals and be the most effective instruments of Krishna's plans.

There are no mysteries, there are no questions. There is only The Mysterious One. The Supreme Answer. That would be Krishna.

"Become the change you wish to see in the world" to me means "embody whatever it is you want to see happen".

When you change yourself, then Krishna changes the rest. (in other words, pull out the weeds)

Gardens that don't get weeded cannot produce the most spectacular blooms.

The blooms will be weak, the plants spindly, the flowers will fade quickly under strong sunlight, and the petals will be cast adrift at the first strong wind.

Drowning

When people are drowning they fight against the very person who is trying to save them.

Change

Change happens
from the
inside

One small thing
becomes
One small thing
becomes
One small thing

this monumental task

this gigantic undertaking

this enormous understanding

Is not
scooped up
in a grasp, on the run

Not torn open
like a gift at a party

Not
delivered upon
the moment
of wanting
needing
desiring

Thinking:
it should be, so
let it be
so,

let it be

This is the life of the spirit

These things are not material

Cultivate
spirit
spirit
lives
within

without
change from
within
without will not
change
